For Schools

Schools from around Washington and around the nation have long made up an important part of the Ford’s Theatre audience.  While the theatre itself is closed, we still hope you will explore the drama and humor of Abraham Lincoln's presidency, his great leadership in a time of national crisis, and the murder that turned national celebration into national mourning.  Please join us for some of the following learning opportunities as we prepare to reopen the theatre and museum in February 2009.

One Destiny

One Destiny at your School, Center or Hotel

One Destiny, by Richard Hellesen, captivated daytime visitors to Ford's Theatre when it played during daytime visiting hours.  In April, May, and October, 2008, Ford’s Theatre will send One Destiny to you and your students.  The play tells the story of  Lincoln's last night through the voices of men who were there, and wished they could have done something to change his fate - and theirs.  This performance is appropriate for students in Grades 4 and higher.  It is offered FREE OF CHARGE to DC Public Schools.  Click here for brochure, or send an email to education@fords.org.

Walks through Civil War Washington

The day is April 15, 1865.  Your guide is Detective James McDevitt, a member of Washington police force.  Follow him on a 90-minute, 1.5 mile walk through the heart of Lincoln's Washington as he endeavors to recreate the mystery and horror of the night when all of Washington searched for Lincoln's assassin, and John Wilkes Booth was not yet captured.  This one-person performance, written by Richard Hellesen, will draw you into the uncertainty and sadness of  that fateful night.  For more information, click here.

Looking Ahead

As its programs develop, Ford’s Theatre looks forward to forging partnerships with schools in the Washington, DC, area through regular interaction, as well as schools outside of the region through visits and Web programs.  If you are interested in exploring opportunities for in-school or out-of-school programs, please contact us at education@fords.org or 202/638-2941 x562.
