Free | For High School Students

High school students, you have something to say. Let’s make sure people hear it. Learn to lead with your voice—and use it to open doors.

The world is shaped by the people who speak up. The leaders who built our nation didn’t just have bold ideas—they had the skills to communicate them. From the voices behind the Declaration of Independence to the leaders who carried Lincoln’s vision forward, change has always begun with someone willing to stand and be heard.

This workshop held at Ford’s Theatre gives you the tools to sharpen communication skills, persuasive writing and gain the confidence colleges and employers look for. This is a great session to hone the tools needed for college essays, professional cover letters and networking.

Open to high school students attending public or Title I schools in the D.C.-metro area. There are two dates to choose from, March 21 or March 28, 2026 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Space is limited. The application deadline is Feb 17, 2025. Selected applicants will be notified by February 27, 2026.

You will:

  • Build confidence in public speaking and self-expression
  • Strengthen writing skills
  • Learn strategies you can use immediately for college essays, interviews, and presentations
  • Develop critical thinking, collaboration, and leadership skills
  • Discover the impact their voice can have in their classroom and community

You’ll learn to express your ideas clearly, speak with purpose and move people with your words. This is about more than history—it’s about your voice, your future and writing your next chapter.

A certificate of completion will be award at the conclusion of the workshop.
