Exploring the African American Civil War Memorial

This event will include standing and walking around city sidewalks, and climbing steps aboard a yellow school bus. A portion of this event will take place outside without available shade or seating.

Dedicated in 1997, the African American Civil War Memorial is only the second monument of its kind, honoring the service and sacrifice of nearly 200,000 Black men who served in the U.S. Military during the Civil War. Join Ford’s Theatre Education in looking closely at this memorial, explore the history of the United States Colored Troops and how their courage influenced Abraham Lincoln’s thoughts on freedom. Gain tools and resources to bring place-based learning into your classroom.

Itinerary:

9:30 a.m. Introduction at Ford’s Theatre

10:00 a.m. Visit the African American Civil War Memorial (Bus transportation Provided)

11:30 a.m. Interactive Classroom Workshop at Ford’s Theatre

12:30 p.m. Workshop Concludes

Participants may request a letter certifying three (3) hours of professional development.
